Millennial Cities Ranking

Millennials are marked for their affinity with media and digital technologies and the consequent positive effect on policy and economy of cities they live in. The migration of individuals of this generation is thus of high interest to everyone from city planners and real estate agents to corporations with long supply chains to recalibrate to the demands of evolving city demographics.Millennials—those aged 17-37 years, i.e. born between the early 1980s to early 2000s—constitute roughly one-third of the world's population, or 2.5 billion people.Individuals from this generation tend to move more often than other generations, a tendency attributed to their highly expectant standards. According to the United Nations Development Programme, millennials represent more than one-third of the world's total international migrant stock. The tendency of millennials to city hop begs the question, which cities most attract millennials and why? Nestpick—a service that helps people find apartments around the world—has developed a Millennial Cities Ranking that includes 100 cities from 40 countries worldwide. The 'best’ cities for millennials assumes good performance across all 16 of the factors it ranks, which are broken down into four categories: business ecosystem, affordable access to the essentials, openness and tolerance, and recreation facilities.*According to the Nestpick, Amsterdam is the perfect city for millennials. The city is perceived as LGBT friendly, has affordable housing, and boasts a lively night scene. Moreover, 29 percent of Amsterdam's population is foreign-born as of 2016, which means that many people have already relocated to this dynamic city. While Amsterdam has the highest overall score, it is highest ranked in only one of the 16 factors - LGBT friendliness. A variety of cities rank higher on a factor-by-factor basis: Bangkok for employment; San Francisco for startups, Medellin by cheap food, and Beijing by beer, for example.Almost all of the top cities from Nestpick score well among other global rankings. For example, Amsterdam was ranked 26th in the Global Cities Index by Bloomberg and the Global Cities Liveability ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Explore today’s Viz and see how cities in your area rank in terms of the millennial appeal.

Housing Affordability Around the World //pt.knoema.com/hyjmcxd/housing-affordability-around-the-world 2022-04-06T17:23:01Z Alina Buzanakova pt.knoema.com://pt.knoema.com/user/1293450
Housing Affordability Around the World

Housing affordability and its impact on middle-income households worldwide is emerging as a major concern throughout the developed world. According to the London-based consultancy Knight Frank, housing prices in the world's largest cities rose by 3 percent on average during the last year. The strongest growth was observed in Turkey where average housing prices increased by 18 percent in the last year. In contrast, across the Black Sea in the Ukraine, property prices declined by 12 percent last year. The US house price index published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis shows a similar increase in property prices, disrupted only by the global recession in 2008-09.  Aside from property prices, household incomes and lending rates in a country also affect the affordability of housing. As a result, a variety of indicators investigating the affordability of property have emerged:Global House Price Index, published by Knight Frank, allows investors and developers to monitor and compare the performance of mainstream residential markets worldwide.House Price Index, published by Eurostat, measures inflation in the residential property market for multiple types of residential property. Today's dashboard features the Property Price Index, collected by Numbeo, a user-generated compilation of data about cities and countries worldwide.

Economic Recovery Lagging in Largest US Cities //pt.knoema.com/nxfdlvd/economic-recovery-lagging-in-largest-us-cities 2021-10-08T14:15:51Z Misha Gusev pt.knoema.com://pt.knoema.com/user/1000560
Economic Recovery Lagging in Largest US Cities

(7 December 2020) Our communities may be the life blood of our national economies, but you'd never guess as much from the paucity of data readily available to support local businesses and city officials. An abundance of official national level economic indicators published anywhere from weekly to annually fuels relatively high velocity analytics compare to cities, where what limited data is available may only be published on a lag of as much as two years. The scarcity of timely socioeconomic statistics becomes especially distressing during periods of instability and recession, like the current corona-crisis. In a move to support local businesses and governments make better informed decisions, the Opportunity Insights project at Harvard University collected a database of high frequency indicators for largest US cities based on data offered by the likes of Affinity, Google, Womply, and Burning Glass. Below are just a few takeaways from this high frequency city level economic data. The Weekly Economic Index from the New York Fed shows that the US economy continues to recover from the corona-crisis but largely outside of major cities. Data on the labor market, consumer demand, mobility, and small businesses for the largest US cities shows that most cities have under performed the national average during the recovery period. While government stimulus and low interest rates have helped consumer demand recover, credit/debit card spending data shows that household expenditures remain about 5-15 percent below January 2020 levels. Washington D.C. is an outlier, with consumer spending still 30 percent below the January 2020 level. The recovery looks grim so far for the US labor market and small businesses. Not one of the 20 largest US cities has seen employment return to pre-crisis levels. And, by the end of November 2020, there were 24 to 45 percent fewer small businesses operational compared to the start of the year. One possible explanation of subdued economic recovery in largest cities would be the increased share of employees who work remotely. More stringent anti-covid restrictions could also contribute to relatively slow recovery in largest cities. More data (and time) will help to illuminate these underlying dynamics.

World's Most Visited Cities

In 2016, Germany, Thailand, and Hong Kong were the top destinations for international travelers while China and the United States accounted for roughly one-third of total tourism expenditures worldwide, according to the World Tourism Organization. But, as people typically visit specific cities within a country, and not the entire country, it is far more interesting to examine city-level tourism statistics. The Global Destination Cities Index, which includes city-level data on the number of overnight international visitors and their spending, reveals that Bangkok attracted the most visitors in 2016, with nearly 21.5 million visitors recorded, followed by London with roughly 20 million visitors, and Paris at 18.3 million. Despite Germany's top rank globally, no German city reached the top 10 for international visitors in 2016.Dubai led globally based on total expenditures of international visitors in 2016, with visitors spending more than $30 billion in the city. Other top-spend cities included London, New York, Paris, and Singapore. In terms of growth, Casablanca, Abu Dhabi, Osaka, Tokyo, and Colombo attracted the most new visitors, a persistent trend for Osaka, which has been among the top 5 cities every year since 2012. There is no overlap between these cities and those with the highest business tourism levels, however; then, Bucharest, Jakarta, and Shanghai jump to the top of the ranking.
