Global Air Traffic on Long and Slow Recovery from the Coronavirus Pandemic

(18 June 2020) Industry experts predict that the aviation industry's recovery from the coronavirus outbreak will be long and slow. According to estimates from Boeing Co. Chief Executive David Calhoun, air traffic may not bounce back for two or three years. Air flights are a major factor in the spread of the coronavirus across globe and within countries. Today the third global wave of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly restrains the recovery of flight traffic.By June 17 the number of commercial flights globally was down 56 percent compared to the pre crisis period and total flights, including military, ambulance, government, and some other types of flights, were 32 percent lower. While stock markets have almost recovered to their pre crisis level, share prices of the largest airlines and aircraft manufacturers are still 20-60 percent below pre crisis peaks. Aircraft manufacturers with heavy military sector orientations, such as Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems, have outperformed others in the industry and returned to nearly pre crisis levels.

The World's Top 100 Airports

If the quality of airports you transit strongly influences your assessment of your overall travel experience, head to Asia. According to the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2017, Asia boasts five of the world’s top 10 airports. Europe came in a close second with four entries in the top 10, led by Munich Airport, ranked fourth globally. First place was awarded to Airport Changi (Singapore), a rank attributable in part to its various facilities for leisure and entertainment designed to ensure maximum levels of passenger satisfaction.Despite a record number of votes for Changi during the last few years, Singapore is not among the top 15 busiest countries by total annual passengers. That title always goes to the United States and China. The Skytrax ratings are based on 13.82 million airport questionnaires completed by airline clients who traveled through 550 airports worldwide. The surveys sought details about travelers’ experience across factors ranging from check-in, arrivals, and transfers to shopping and security and immigration.  The countries with the greatest number of the world's top airports, the United States and China, also report the highest passenger traffic. But, beyond the United States and China, countries with airports from the World Airport Awards are distributed randomly within the ranking compared to total air passenger traffic. The number of passengers carried by any country seems to depend less on the rating of the airports and more on other factors such as the population of a country and its attractiveness to business, immigrant, and tourist travelers, all of which influence the air traffic handling infrastructure capacity.

Evolving threats to civil aviation will almost certainly drive demand for investment in new security technologies to detect and mitigate security threats while leaving total global air passenger traffic relatively unscathed because of strong growth drivers. Industry analysts anticipate that the global aviation sector's growth in 2016 will exceed the 6.5 percent growth in passenger traffic last year. Drivers for growth include increasing air traffic volumes in China, South East Asia, and the Middle East as well as sustained lower global oil prices.  Recent deadly plane crashes, including Russia (March 2016) and Egypt (October 2015), as well as the terrorist attack at the airport in Brussels, Belgium, present wildcards that will likely only affect the industry's growth on the margins.Airlines will manage varying levels of additional capital costs for fleet maintenance and security as well as losses for intermittent reductions in air traffic volumes in markets affected by terrorism. While the aviation sector may be an attractive terrorist target, as commercial air traffic has steadily grown so too has the industry's safety record, suggesting it possesses the responsiveness required to address modern aviation threats. In 2008, about 1 million people died in road accidents worldwide compared to 1,000 fatalities in plane crashes.Aviation is also the fastest and arguably the most comfortable means of long-distance travel, virtually ensuring continued air passenger traffic growth well beyond the more than 3 billion passengers carried by air in 2014. The allure of this industry to terrorists and other attackers is unlikely to diminish and demands continued security investment to match the evolving threats. Aviation is a soft target with high symbolic value and media exposure. Attacks are costly for the airlines, affected families, and countries involved. Successful attacks also have the strong potential to cause political embarrassment and scrutiny, as is the situation now with international attention pivoting to the failed aviation security screening processes in Egypt. __________________________________________________________________________ Overview | Plane Crash Statistics | Air Passenger Market Analysis | Air Transport Traffic Data | Airline Companies | The European Aircraft Fleet

On the whole, the European aircraft fleet can be positively characterized as constantly upgrading. Aircraft aged less than five years constitute the largest share of the total aircraft fleet. Sharp differences exist, however, among European countries. As of 2011, Germany had the second largest aircraft fleet in Europe and, at the same time, the oldest fleet. Twenty percent of the country's aircrafts were more than 20 years old, an increase from 17 percent of the fleet in 2010. The number of new aircraft in the fleet also grew from 2010 to 2011 but at a lower rate.In contrast, the same year Turkey became the top country by new aircraft growth after adding 18 new aircraft to its fleet. Turkey's new aircraft fleet made up 8 percent of the total European new craft fleet.  __________________________________________________________________________ Overview | Plane Crash Statistics | Air Passenger Market Analysis | Air Transport Traffic Data | Airline Companies | The European Aircraft Fleet

On Sunday, 28 December 2014, an AirAsia flight QZ8501 on an Airbus 320 with 162 people on board lost contact with ground control and crashed in the Java Sea. It was the third largest aircraft catastrophe by number of casualties in 2014. Overall death count in 2014 reached 1,329 people, but it was not a "record" year. In fact, 2014 year was 59th by rank of fatalities in plane crash accidents in history. See the list of all 2014 plane crashes in the table or analyst the nearly 100-year history of aircraft accidents in the line chart at the bottom of the page. All data comes from the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives, Geneva. __________________________________________________________________________ Overview | Plane Crash Statistics | Air Passenger Market Analysis | Air Transport Traffic Data | Airline Companies | The Euoprean Aircraft Fleet

The World - Paramount Armed Forces

A Country's projection of power relies in large part upon its military capabilities. Successfully being able to project and wield that power is a key diplomatic asset. America's biggest conventional military advantages is its fleet of 19 aircrafts carriers, compared to 12 carriers operated by the rest of the World combined. These massive carriers allow the US to setup forward operating bases anywhere and project power throughtout the World.
