17 September 2015 - Knoema presents below a series of visuals that provide insight into the economic and socio-demographic conditions in Haiti under President Michel Martelly compared to pervious presidents. We invite you to explore the data through our interactive visualizations to draw out your own insights. Following are a few highlights we found noteworthy:

  • While several key economic indicators - such as GDP per capita and unemployment - remained relatively unchanged throughout the three presidencies, other indicators have seen sharp improvements, including inflation and debt per capita.
  • The composition of trade partners has been relatively unchanged since Aristide - the US is the dominant trade partner because of preferential trade arrangement. The trade balance, however, shifted strongly negative during the covered period as imports increased steeply under President Preval. The trade balance has been particularly affected by imports of cereals as well as textiles for value added processing and reexport.
  • The infant and under-5 mortality rates have steadily improved under President Martelly, as have the male and female life expectancy rates. It should be noted that the infant and under-5 mortality rates, as well as selected other indicators, were acutely affected by the 2010 earthquake but have in the years since returned to normal levels.
  • As reflected in recent warnings from the US State Department to tourists, crime - specifically the homicide rate - has grown in Haiti despite efforts to reign in gang activity and other violet crime.
  • Despite select business indicators showing some improvement, particularly measures of "business freedom" during the past year, Haiti still struggles to implement changes that will improve its investment competitiveness within the region.
