EU Migration to UK after Bexit

The UK has not left the EU yet, but Europeans are already leaving Britain as net migration to the UK from other EU countries has reached a near six-year low. The difference between the number of EU citizens entering the UK and the number leaving, that is net migration has sunk to 87,000 in 2018Q1 (ending year March 2018 and figure is provisional), its lowest level since the year 2013Q1. Net EU migration has continued to decline from a peak of 189,000 in the year 2016Q2 (June 2016), a period ending with the vote to leave the EU. The shift has been driven by both a decline in EU arrivals and an increase in EU citizens emigrating. The decline in net migration has slowed by an increase in net migration from the 15 countries that belonged to the EU before 2004. However, a surge in migrants from outside the EU continued and reached to 235,000 in 2018Q1 (ending year March 2018 and figure is provisional). The Brexit process has impact through economic and social channels. The slowing economy and pound sterling depreciation have played vital roles in the migration. The slowing economy is not generating enough employment to attract more migrant and the pound depreciation has discouraged the workers coming to UK for higher wages and getting less than they were in the past. On the other hand, economic conditions in many of the key EU countries have improved over the past few years which have been encouraged the migration back to native countries. The social factor like hate crime and violence have been increased after the EU referendum. The implications of Brexit may be bad for UK economy in terms of brain drain in vital industries, creating skills gap, heavy investment required in training where there are local shortages. Brexodus, the exodus of EU citizens from the UK ahead of Brexit, is potentially destabilizing force in the lives of EU citizens resident in the UK and Brexit process has provoked sense of insecurity among the EU residents. However, migration is multilayered process and family condition play very important role apart from political and economic changes in the country.
