The Department of Transportation was established by an act of Congress on October 15, 1966. The Department’s first official day of operation was April 1, 1967.

Travel for the month is estimated to be 256.1 billion vehicle miles. The seasonally adjusted vehicle miles traveled for April 2023 is 267.0 billion miles, a +1.2% (+3.2 billion vehicle miles) change over April 2022. It also represents a +0.1% change (+0.2 billion vehicle miles) compared with March 2023.
