Definitions: Primary aluminium is aluminium tapped from electrolytic cells or pots during the electrolytic reduction of metallurgical alumina (aluminium oxide). It thus excludes alloying additives and recycled aluminium. Primary aluminium production is defined as the quantity of primary aluminium produced in a defined period. It is the quantity of molten or liquid metal tapped from the pots and that is weighed before transfer to a holding furnace or before further processing. Source of Data: The data included in this IAI Statistical Report have been derived from voluntary reports of IAI Member and non-Member companies. Sources outside the industry or estimates are used for "Estimated Unreported" and "China" regions only. Data Aggregation: The IAI Statistical System is designed to meet the requirement that, in general, individual company data be included only within appropriately aggregated totals by declared geographical areas and not be reported separately. Note: Worldsteel's Steel Statistical Yearbook for 2019 and 2020 are concise version World steel's Steel Statistical Yearbook presents a cross-section of steel industry statistics. It contains comprehensive statistics from 2008 to 2022 on crude steel production by country and process, steel production by product, steel trade by product, apparent steel use and apparent steel use per capita by country, as well as production and trade of pig iron and directly reduced iron. It also includes data on production and trade of iron ore and trade of scrap.  of steel and true steel use. Excess capacity is one of the main challenges facing the global steel sector. The OECD Steelmaking Capacity database contains data on crude steelmaking capacity by economy and provides researchers and policymakers with an important tool for analysing steel capacity developments.
