      BP Energy Outlook Charts Data Pack - 2019 edition The Energy Outlook considers different aspects of the energy transition and the key issues and uncertainties these raise.   In all the scenarios considered, world GDP more than doubles by 2040 driven by increasing prosperity in fast-growing developing economies. In the Evolving transition (ET) scenario this improvement in living standards causes energy demand to increase by around a third over the Outlook, driven by India, China and Other Asia which together account for two-thirds of the increase. Despite this increase in energy demand, around two-thirds of the world’s population in 2040 still live in countries where average energy consumption per head is relatively low, highlighting the need for ‘more energy’. Energy consumed within industry and buildings accounts for around three-quarters of the increase in energy demand. Growth in transport demand slows sharply relative to the past, as gains in vehicle efficiency accelerate. The share of passenger vehicle kilometres powered by electricity increases to around 25% by 2040, supported by the growing importance of fully-autonomous cars and shared-mobility services.

The energy balance allows users to see the total amount of energy extracted from the environment, traded, transformed and used by different types of end-users. It also allows seeing the relative contribution of each energy carrier (fuel, product). The energy balance allows studying the overall domestic energy market and monitoring impacts of energy policies. The energy balance offers a complete view on the energy situation of a country in a compact format, such as on energy consumption of the whole economy and of individual sectors. The energy balance presents all statistically significant energy products (fuels) of a country and their production, transformation and consumption by different type of economic actors (industry, transport, etc.). Therefore, an energy balance is the natural starting point to study the energy sector. Annual data collection cover in principle the EU Member States, EFTA, EU candidate countries, and potential candidate countries. Time series starts mostly in year 1990. All data in energy balances are presented in terajoules, kilotonnes of oil equivalent and gigawatt hours.

This means that the consumption in industry covers all industrial sectors with the exception of the energy sector, like power stations, oil refineries, coke ovens and all other installations transforming energy products into another form. Final energy consumption in households/services covers quantities consumed by private households, small-scale industry, crafts, commerce, administrative bodies, services with the exception of transportation, agriculture and fishing.

      This dataset covers indicators for monitoring progress towards energy efficiency targets of Europe 2020 strategy implemented by Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency. Targets for 2030 are included on the basis of Directive (EU) 2018/2002. The European Union (EU) has committed itself to a 20 % reduction of energy consumption by the year 2020 compared to baseline projections. This objective is also known as the 20 % energy efficiency target. In other words, the EU-28 has committed itself to have a primary energy consumption of no more than 1 483 Mtoe and a final energy consumption of no more than 1 086 Mtoe in 2020. For 2030 the binding target is at least 32.5 % reduction. This translates into a primary energy consumption of no more than 1 273 Mtoe and a final energy consumption of no more than 956 Mtoe in 2030.       The indicator is the ratio between the Gross Inland Consumption of Energy and the Gross Domestic Product calculated for a calendar year. It measures the energy consumption of an economy and its overall energy efficiency. The Gross Inland Consumption of Energy is calculated as the sum of the Gross Inland Consumption of the five types of energy: coal, electricity, oil, natural gas and renewable energy sources. In addition, each of these figures is calculated as an aggregation of different data on production, storage, trade (imports/exports) and consumption/use of energy. The GDP figures are taken at chain-linked volumes, reference year 2005 (at 2005 exchange rates). The energy intensity ratio is the result of dividing the Gross Inland Consumption by the GDP. Since Gross Inland Consumption is measured in kgoe (kilogram of oil equivalent) and GDP in 1000 EUR, this ratio is measured in kgoe per 1000 EUR. All necessary data related to energy data is compiled through five annual Joint Questionnaires (one for each type of energy above-mentioned). These questionnaires are called « joint » because they are shared by Eurostat and the International Energy Agency (organisation that belongs to the OECD).       The indicator results from the division of the gross domestic product (GDP) by the gross inland consumption of energy for a given calendar year. It measures the productivity of energy consumption and provides a picture of the degree of decoupling of energy use from growth in GDP. For the calculation of energy productivity Eurostat uses the GDP either in the unit of million euro in chain-linked volumes to the reference year 2010 (at 2010 exchange rates) or in the unit purchasing power standard (PPS). The unit euro in chain linked volumes allows observing the energy productivity trends over time in a single geographic area, whereas the unit PPS allows comparison between countries for the same year. The gross inland consumption of energy is calculated as the sum of the gross inland consumption of five energy types: coal, electricity, oil, natural gas and renewable energy sources. Since GDP is measured in million euro or million PPS and gross inland consumption in thousand tonnes of oil equivalent, energy productivity is available both in euro per kg of oil equivalent and PPS per kg of oil equivalent.

      The energy balance is the most complete statistical accounting of energy products and their flow in the economy. The energy balance allows users to see the total amount of energy extracted from the environment, traded, transformed and used by different types of end-users. It also allows seeing the relative contribution of each energy carrier (fuel, product). The energy balance allows studying the overall domestic energy market and monitoring impacts of energy policies. The energy balance offers a complete view on the energy situation of a country in a compact format, such as on energy consumption of the whole economy and of individual sectors. The energy balance presents all statistically significant energy products (fuels) of a country and their production, transformation and consumption by different type of economic actors (industry, transport, etc.). Therefore, an energy balance is the natural starting point to study the energy sector. Annual data collection cover in principle the EU Member States, EFTA, EU candidate countries, and potential candidate countries. Time series starts mostly in year 1990. All data in energy balances are presented in terajoules, kilotonnes of oil equivalent and gigawatt hours.

      The indicator expresses the sum of the energy supplied to the final consumers for all energy uses. It is the sum of final energy consumption in industry, transport, households, services, agriculture, etc. Final energy consumption in industry covers the consumption in all industrial sectors with the exception of the ´Energy sector´. The fuel quantities transformed in the electrical power stations of industrial autoproducers and the quantities of coke transformed into blast-furnace gas are not part of the overall industrial consumption but of the transformation sector. Final energy consumption in transport covers the consumption in all types of transportation, i.e., rail, road, air transport and inland navigation. Final energy consumption in households, services, etc. covers quantities consumed by private households, commerce, public administration, services, agriculture and fisheries. The indicator is a Sustainable Development Indicator (SDI).       Final energy consumption in households: The indicator measures the final residential energy consumption (total consumption) expressed in 1000 tonnes of oil equivalent. It aims to identify trends in energy consumption in households, as these trends are addressed by various policies of the European Union. The target is to reduce the total energy consumption by improving the energy efficiency (of residential buildings and electric appliances in residential buildings).  This data are extracted from the data set for quantitative energy statistics (Eurostat navigation tree > Database by themes > Environment and energy > Energy > nrg_quant > nrg_10 > nrg_100a).   Final energy consumption in households by fuel: This indicator presents the share of six fuel types to the final residential energy consumption: solid fuels, total petroleum fuels, gas, electrical energy, derived heat and renewable energies. The share of each fuel is expressed in per cent of the total consumption. Both indicators are resource efficiency indicators (t2020_rk200, t2020_rk210). They are included in the Resource Efficiency Scoreboard for the assessment of progress towards the objectives and targets of the Europe 2020 flagship initiative on Resource Efficiency. The two indicators have been chosen as proxies for indicators in the key area 'Improving buildings' of the resource efficiency initiative. This area focuses on the energy spent in households for heating purposes and how the amelioration of buildings can contribute to energy-saving plans. Eurostat collects data on total energy consumption in households split by fuel category.       These are data collected via the annual electricity and heat questionnaire. The variables are: Total capacity (MWe)Capacity by source of electricity production (MWe)Capacity by type of generation in power plants using combustible fuels (MWe)Capacity by type of firing and by type of fuel used in power plants using combustible fuels (MWe) All reported capacities are broken down by type of supplier (main activity producer or auto-producer).  For plants based on combustion of fuels the capacity is further divided by type of technology of the generating plant (steam, internal combustion….), by type of firing and by type of fuels.   Further variables are: Peak load (MWe) the maximum load on an electrical power-supply systemCapacity at peak (MWe)Date and time of peak load occurrence The peak load is the highest simultaneous demand for electricity satisfied during the year. The capacity at time of peak load is the total available net capacity at that time.   Data collection covers the full spectrum of the 28 Member States of the European Union.

      These are statistics concerning the civil use of nuclear energy by Member States of the EU. The variables are:enrichment capacity,production capacity of fresh fuel elements,production capacity of MOX fuel fabrication plants, production of fresh fuel elements,production of MOX fuel elements, production of nuclear heat,annual average burnup of definitively discharged irradiated fuel elements,production of Uranium and Plutonium in reprocessing plants and capacity (Uranium and Plutonium) of reprocessing plants. Data collection covers in principle Member States of the European Union, Iceland and Norway. However, only 14 EU Member States (Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, France, Hungary, The Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden and UK) operate nuclear reactors. EU-28 aggregate is shown for all variables (except for annual average burnup or those with confidential data).

      Short-term statistics (STS) give information on a wide range of economic activities according to NACE Rev.2 classification (Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community). The industrial import price indices offer information according to the CPA classification (Statistical Classification of Products by Activity in the European Economic Community). Construction indices are broken down by Classification of Types of Constructions (CC). All data under this heading are index data. Percentage changes are also available for each indicator. The index data are generally presented in the following forms: UnadjustedCalendar adjustedSeasonally adjusted Depending on the STS regulation data are accessible as monthly, quarterly and annual data. This heading covers the indicators listed below in four different sectors. Based on the national data, Eurostat compiles EU and euro area infra-annual economic statistics. Among these, a list of indicators, called Principal European Economic Indicators (PEEIs) has been identified by key users as being of prime importance for the conduct of monetary and economic policy of the euro area.       Total gross electricity generation covers gross electricity generation in all types of power plants. The gross electricity generation at the plant level is defined as the electricity measured at the outlet of the main transformers, i.e. the consumption of electricity in the plant auxiliaries and in transformers are included.

The ranking measures overall performance in achieving a sustainable mix of policies and the balance score highlights how well a country manages the trade-offs of the Trilemma with "A" being the best.
